About Me
Mitchell Prost
Candidate for UofT Governing Council
Hello! Thank you for being here.
My name is Mitchell, and I'm running for a seat on the University of Toronto's Governing Council as a Graduate Student representing constituency I (all Students registered in Division I (Humanities) and Division II (Social Sciences) of the School of Graduate Studies).
I am currently a Master of Education student at OISE studying Higher Education. I have a deep interest in understanding how universities work, especially from a governance perspective. As a member of Governing Council, I hope to merge my academic interests with my diverse range of experiences in university leadership at multiple levels.
On this website you will find a summary of my professional and student leadership experience, and my priorities for Governing Council.
I hope after reading through my experiences and my priorities that you will vote Mitchell for Governing Council!
Sincerely,
Mitchell Prost
My Priorities
If elected, I will bring these priorities to Governing Council to improve the student experience and our institution
As a member of Governing Council, I will have the ability to vote on important items that come to the Council, including budget, tuition, capital projects (such as new buildings and facilities), senior administrative officer appointments, academic policies and much more. Previous meeting agendas and packages of Governing Council for this past year can be found here for more information. It is important to note that the role of a member of Governing Council member isn't to bring items to the Council for discussion - that is the role of the Administration (President, Vice-Presidents, etc.).
If elected to Governing Council, I will use the following priorities to guide my work:
Affordability
Students are under increasing financial stresses and pressure - worrying about being able to afford tuition at a world-class university like UofT should not be a factor. As a Governor, I will:
-
Approach financial decisions Governing Council makes with the ability of students to afford their education at the forefront
-
Work with the administration of the university to develop a student affordability plan that touches upon all services that students interact with, from tuition to food services to housing, that puts real action to the affordability crisis we are facing
-
Support the university in developing more below-market rate student housing on all three campuses, providing more beds for students and decreasing waitlists
